SIGNS & TRAILS

ARCHAEOLOGY OF TRACKING

If every experience leaves a mark, tracking is the act of attempting to understand it. In Signs and Trails, Raúl López García approaches the sign not as closed representation, but as an element in process — something to be followed, examined, and transformed.

The pictorial surfaces do not merely contain marks; they activate a system of inquiry. Each gesture suggests prior displacement, a memory that has migrated from one context to another. Painting becomes a territory where the sign is tracked, fragmented, and reinscribed.

Tracking does not imply nostalgic recovery of the past, but active reconstruction of meaning. Every culture produces symbolic systems that move and hybridize; to follow their traces is to acknowledge their mutability.

In this series, the artist does not fix meanings, but opens fields of interpretation. The viewer participates in this process of tracking, encountering structures that suggest proto-writings, partial cartographies, and vestiges of memory in transit.

Signs and Trails thus proposes an archaeology of tracking: a pictorial practice in which the sign is not a static object, but a living process of inquiry.
